3 new fishing spots to try in Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is such a large lake that there are always new and exciting fishing spots to try. We’ve listed what we believe to be the most popular spots in our top 10 fishing spots in Lake Macquarie article. However, there are lots of other spots that narrowly missed out. When we put the top 10 list together we focused on ease of access and managing families. Some of the spots below are just as good, or may not be as suitable for young families.

Eraring Water Outlet

Eraring Power Station is located in the suburb of Eraring, and is almost next door to what used to be known as the Myuna Sport and Recreation Centre. The centre is now disused and dismantled, however, the water outlet for the power station is still here. Travel to the end of Rocky Point Road and you will see the the water outlet. The outlet channels the hot “used” water from the power station back into the lake. Because the water is so warm sea life love to take up home here. Australian Bass, Mullet and Estuary Perch are very common here, however everything from sharks to turtles have been seen here. This is a very popular spot, with plenty of people travelling from Sydney to here. That said, there is plenty of room for all to share.

Myuna Bay Rest Area

Located not far from the water outlet is Myuna Bay Rest Area. This rest area has a playground for children and the water is quite shallow for a large portion of the coastline. It can be a bit weedy here with seagrass, however, if you put aside the feeling of the seagrass on your feet there is generally a lot of fish hiding/relaxing in the weed. Plenty of people have landed some good size Bream and Flathead here. There are also some great spots here to put your kayak in the water and paddle around in the shallow water. There is lots of parking and typically it does not get that busy here. It is not well signposted from the road and due to the speed zone, most people simply drive past it unaware of what they’re missing.

Under Five Islands Bridge (cockle Creek)

Five Islands Bridge is typically a traffic jam mid-morning and mid-afternoon, however, if you time it right and get around the horrible roundabout you’ll find a really great spot to fish with the family. Cockle Creek runs under the bridge and the roadway provides both shade and shelter from the rain. There is lots of room away from the road to set up a chair or two, allowing you to fish here for hours. The water can be a bit murky at times when it rains. That said, there is plenty of opportunity to land Mullet, Bream, Flathead and the odd Eel.
